Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach Urban Meyer seeks to fulfill the role of coordinator of its special teams after Brian schneider withdrew for personal reasons. Schneider announced his decision earlier this month.
Meyer began interviewing candidates for the post. A name that has momentum generated is the former Detroit Lions special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs. There is a connection between Coombs and Meyer according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.
Wilson reported that Meyer has a good relation with the Coombs family going back to their time with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Coombs’ father, Kerry Coombs, is the defensive coordinator of the university football center.
Coombs spent last season with the Detroit Lions. He was fired in December after the Lions changed coaches. He was on Matt Patricia’s staff and guided the Lions special teams unit had its moments. The Lions were successful 75% of their field goal attempts and also had a punt return touchdown.
However, there have been some unfortunate situations. Former Lions Interim Head Coach Darrell bevell admitted that Coombs called for a fake punt of his own volition. It was not disclosed to Bevell at the time.
Ironically, Bevell is also on Meyer’s staff as the Jaguars offensive coordinator. If Coombs wins the job, it will be interesting to see the dynamic with Bevell as they will once again be on the same stick.
Prior to the Lions, Coombs was an assistant special teams coach for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2012 to 2018. He has also been an assistant coach since joining the Bengals organization in the 2009 campaign.
The Jaguars could be a good landing point given his relationship with Meyer. There are also several young players who will be able to learn from his experience as a coordinator.
This season, Meyer has shown a tendency to hire staff with previous experience. He added former colleagues like Charlie strong among others. Meyer also hired Chris Ash college ranks too.
Meyer plans to put in place the best staff possible. This means having multiple interviews for the task of task force coordinator.
“I will say to my team, ‘My job is to bring you the best of the best of the best. It’s to improve your value as a player, ”said Meyer after being hired. “How do you improve your worth as a player? You become an expert at what you do, you play for a big organization and you win games.
“You’re going to hear it quite often. My # 1 responsibility is to improve the value of these players – and by the way: winning games improves the value of each. “
Regardless of how Meyer fills the role, it’s clear Coombs has another opportunity to impress as a special teams coordinator once again.
