I Tried Medik8's Buzzy Science-Backed Skincare Products. Here's My Honest Review
Spoiler alert: I'm now a total convert.
If you’re one of the many people currently wondering, “How did everyone’s skin get so damn smooth?” these days, we’ll let you in on a little secret: vitamin A probably has something to do with it. Often considered the umbrella term for a range of popular retinoids, this powerhouse ingredient is beloved by dermatologists for its effectiveness in smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, minimizing breakouts, and fading stubborn dark spots over time.
For these reasons, vitamin A has remained at the center of science-backed skincare brand Medik8, which has been winning over TikTokers and beauty editors for awhile now. Created by Elliot Isaacs, a pharmacology and biochemistry graduate, in 2009, the UK-based label was built upon the philosophy that an essential skincare routine requires nothing more than vitamin C and face sunscreen during the day, plus vitamin A at night. Fast forward to 2023, and the brand’s cutting-edge technologies continue to make the buzzy, youth-boosting ingredient accessible for a range of skin types.
The brand has patented its own version of retinal, one of the most potent over-the-counter forms of vitamin A, that’s available in a strength tier system so you can find the right concentration to meet your needs. You can start with the gentlest strength, Crystal Retinal 1, and work your way up to prescription-strength Crystal Retinal 20, depending on your skin’s level of sensitivity. (Note: the brand carries some milder retinol-based products, too). Additionally, Medik8 has a patented r-Retinoate line, featuring a powerful vitamin A-cocktail found to be gentler for sensitive skin types. Many of these formulas also include the label’s special encapsulation systems, which slowly release retinoids into your skin to increase the product’s shelf life and further reduce your chances of irritation.
Admittedly, before Medik8, my retinoid knowledge was slim. I have reactive skin that’s prone to redness and dryness, so I assumed any form of vitamin A—which can irritate sensitive complexions—was a no-go for me. And as someone who’s always kept their beauty routine pretty bare-bones (my mom has effectively sold me on the one-step washcloth-and-bar-soap method), you could say I’m typically pretty hesitant to add new products into my routine.
But thanks to Medik8, I’m now a vitamin A convert. The brand’s products are customizable, super easy to use, and deliver fast results that are backed by science to boot. If you’re curious to experience their effects for yourself, check out my guide to the best Medik8 products worth adding to your lineup, below. Alongside my favorite retinoid-based products from the brand, I’ve also highlighted a handful of their other skincare gems—from an ultra-plumping hyaluronic acid serum to my go-to cleansing oil for removing heavy makeup.
