Go Behind the Scenes as Maude Apatow Gets Ready for the Met Gala

Her Chloé look was inspired by a dress Karl Lagerfeld created for the brand in 1983.

When the dress code is a person, it can be limiting—but not when the person in question is Karl Lagerfeld. The late designer is iconic in every sense of the word, from his stint at Chloé to his long-standing tenures at Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous brand to his unmissable uniform comprised of a white button-down shirt, black sunglasses, and a tailored black jacket, making him the perfect fashion figure to be honored at this year’s Met Gala for the accompanying Costume Institute exhibit, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”

As a guest of Chloé and designer Gabriela Hearst, Maude Apatow had plenty of archives to mine from—specifically styles dating back to the late ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, when Lagerfeld served as the main designer and Chloé defined the sartorial zeitgeist of the time, gaining fans such as Jackie O. and Grace Kelly. The Euphoria star ultimately landed on a black cutout gown inspired by a dress Lagerfeld created for Chloé’s fall/winter 1983-84 collection, reimagined by Hearst and created bespoke in the brand’s Paris atelier in collaboration with master embroiderer Maison Hurel, who worked on the original piece.

But not before she slipped into a LILYSILK robe and got glammed up for the big night. Apatow was eagerly anticipating her second-ever red carpet, roaches and all. “I am always excited to see what Rihanna is going to arrive in!” she told ELLE.com ahead of the event. And maybe a Choupette, er, Jared Leto sighting? “I love how much [Lagerfeld] loves cats.”

Below, see Apatow’s getting-ready diary.

It’s all in the details. This arrow motif was made from hand-embroidered faceted mirror and silver tubular beads—incredible!
